Making salt dough ornaments are a little tradition at our house during the Christmas Season. My son made them last year when he was just 1 1/2 and he gave them as gifts at Christmas. He had so much fun helping roll out the dough, then using cookies cutters to make shapes and then later after we baked them he enjoyed getting to paint them.
Here is the recipe that I use for Salt Dough:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of fine salt
- 1 cup of flour
- 1/2 cup of warm water (may add more)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine the salt and the flour
- Make a well in the salt/flour mixture and add the water
- Knead until smooth and shape into a ball
- When not in use, wrap in plastic or store in an airtight container
Bake cutouts at 325 degrees for about an hour.
After you let the ornaments cool, you may paint them.
**Before you bake them don't forget to poke holes in the top to put a string through to hang them.

Also, I came across this sweet ornament made using the salt dough and I think I might give it a try this year!

You may also decide not to make/bake ornaments and instead add food
color and store in a container as a gift of playdough for your kiddo!
